Sony's X900H Series does everything it sets out to do as a smart TV, and in some style. Its picture quality is quite startling in the right circumstances, its sound is more than adequate by prevailing standards, it’s simple to use and it doesn’t turn its nose up at content of inferior resolution.
The panel itself is a VA-type LCD, which in broad terms has to be considered an upgrade on the IPS edge-lit panel Sony deployed on last year’s equivalent model. The higher brightness, greater color volume and improved screen uniformity promised by a full array VA panel ought to more than make up for the rather more restricted viewing angle when compared to IPS. It’s noting, too, the X900H doesn’t feature the X-Wide viewing angle technology Sony’s flagship X950H range is toting.
The key to this TV's image quality, as with all LCD based sets that perform well in my side-by-side tests, is well implemented Full Array local dimming. It improves black levels and contrast by illuminating different areas of the screen separately as needed. In some crucial ways, such as reducing stray illumination with HDR, the X900H beat the similarly equipped TCL- 6 Series in those tests, but in other ways the TCL won out, with superior brightness and contrast overall. The Sony also costs more than the TCL, so it's not my top recommendation for people who want the best image quality for the money.

The set also comes with two feet you can attach at the bottom which lets you stand the set on a console or bookcase or wherever you choose. There are also mounting options on the back which make it easy the hang on the wall.
Talk about a plug and play situation, the TCL Series 5 Roku Smart TV was up and running in truly about an hour. That included getting it connected to the Nest WiFi System, (The set works on 2.4 and 5GHZ), and also to my Sonos Beam Soundbar, as well as the Apple TV.
The Series 5 TCL walked us through every step, and was also physically easy to install.

The all-new Samsung Q70T QLED TV boasts much of the feature armory found in Samsung’s more expensive QLED 4K screens, but doesn’t come with such a punishing price tag – making it a great buy for folks who can't reasonably spend a couple thousand on the flagship Samsung Q95T.
It delivers good performance for most uses and comes with some extra features like variable refresh rate (VRR) support to reduce screen tearing in games. The TV has a high 120Hz refresh rate and an okay response time. There's a Black Frame Insertion feature to help reduce motion blur. It also has an incredibly low input lag, making for a responsive gaming experience. The TV uses a VA panel with a fantastic contrast ratio and remarkable black uniformity, producing deep inky blacks even though it lacks a local dimming feature. Unfortunately, it has poor viewing angles, so the image looks washed out from the side, but this is typical of TVs with VA panels. While it gets bright enough to combat glare and has decent reflection handling for well-lit rooms, it can't get bright enough to deliver a truly satisfying HDR experience.
For gamers, the Q70T is a formidable proposition. Not only is image lag low, both with and without processing, there’s a 4K 120fps HDMI just waiting for your next games console. It also confounds when it comes to black level performance and screen uniformity... provided you keep the lights on

The Insignia Fire TV is a decent 4K TV with a decent picture quality. It has a high native contrast ratio and produces deep blacks, but unfortunately, they are not very uniform and the lack of local dimming cannot help improve the appearance of dark scenes. The image degrades rapidly when viewed from the side so it is not a good choice for a large room with a wide seating arrangement. The TV supports HDR, but it can't deliver the creators intent. This Insignia TV integrates very well with the Amazon Alexa voice assistant.
With 4K resolution, HDR support with Dolby Vision and a huge library of apps and content, the real selling point of the Insignia Fire TV isn't any one feature, but the total package of smart capabilities that are offered in this ultra-affordable TV.
While it's true that you get what you pay for – the performance isn't top-of-the-line, the gaming support is middling and the Fire TV platform is a little too Amazon-centric for my liking – it's still a great option for casual viewers, and it's priced to sell like crazy. What to look for in a smart TV
Not quite sure what specs or features you need? Don’t worry. Here’s a rundown of what to keep an eye out for.
Smart TV screens
The screen is obviously the most important part of any TV, and smart TVs are no exception. There are three aspects of your TV screen you should consider in particular.
Screen size
How big do you need your TV to be? Keep in mind bigger isn’t always better—if you’re in a bedroom or smaller living room, a more compact TV may actually be better.
That’s because every TV has an optimal viewing distance based on screen size, angle, and room size. For the average living room, we’d say 55″–65″ is ideal.
Screen type
There are two basic types of smart TV displays: LED, QLED, and QLED.
LED (light-emitting diode) is your standard LCD display illuminated by LED lights, either from behind or the sides.
OLED (organic light-emitting diode) is a newer display type where each pixel lights up individually rather than using a backlight.
Generally, OLED TVs produce a better picture than LED TVs. Because each individual pixel can turn on and off, there’s a better contrast ratio, which gives the picture a stunning depth. Newer LED technology is catching up, though.
QLED (“quantum dot LED TV” or quantum light-emitting diode”) uses nanoparticles to boost brightness, color, and contrast. QLED is most common with Samsung TVs, but the manufacturer does license the technology to other TV makers.

These days, most TVs come in 4K Ultra HD. And really, unless you’re shopping under about $500, you should look only for 4K.

Refresh rate
Refresh rate is how quickly the picture on your screen updates, measured in Hertz (HZ). Look for a refresh rate of at least 60 Hz (one refresh per second), and preferably 120 or 240 HZ.
Higher refresh rates are better for displaying quick action like sports. Above 240 Hz, there’s little noticeable improvement, though—at least with current technology.
HDR
HDR stands for high dynamic range, and it’s a screen technology that helps increase the contrast between light and dark parts of an image. It’s one of the few television features that truly lives up to the hype. And fortunately, most TVs above five or six hundred dollars have it.
Sound quality
Built-in speakers on smart TVs can be lacking. This is especially true if you’re used to external audio like a sound bar or surround sound system. Don’t expect much from your TV’s internal speakers—for the best experience, plan on picking up at least a basic sound bar.
